Green colour schemes – How to use green in your home

Some designers and stylists always fit a little bit of green into a room no matter what and it often comes in the shape of a real life plant if not in the decor itself. It has been suggested that green is so uplifting and such a natural everyday earthly colour that without it, we subconciously feel stuck, claustrophobic and stale. Perhaps it is because we perceive the colour green as the generator of life and all it’s forms, like the grass we walk on, the mountains we seek and the air we breathe from the trees. Without it, life simply would not exist.

Try it next time you walk into a room and look for all things green. Do you feel a bit funny in a room with no green at all? Do you feel relaxed in a room with a plant?

So what colours can green work with? Green is very versatile.

For a natural moody scheme, try a warm army green with mustard, dirty browns, chocolate, warm grey, sandy beige and rich tan.

For a contemporary scheme, try a mid warm green with off white, dirt brown, stone grey and mushroom pink.

For a light and airy scheme, try a light cool pastel green with blush pink or baby blue and crisp white.

For a pop of colour, try contrasting green and purple, green and fuscia, green and orange or green and pink together.

Tip: Unless you want a Christmas theme house 365 days a year or an unsettling feeling that never goes away, don’t team a rich green with a rich red directly together. Pare back one of the two colours or use in small doses.

Don’t restrict the colour just to paint. Check out the scheme blocks below. One could be a wall colour, the other a sofa, another a table etc. For instance, brown in the scheme could be a leather armchair or a timber floor… you get the idea.

Diggin' this color scheme for the Love Shack. Throw a few lemon yellows and a royal blue in there and I'm all over it.
