The best way to get your “affairs” in order is to GET YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER!
Seriously though, you cannot get organised until you get some organisation happening and the best way to do this is shop for awesome home office stuff.
There are many options to suit whatever style you’re into. Why not lash out and go for something that’s completely different to what you have now. If you are like me, you are probably stuck with a collection of odd coloured folders, manky magazine holders and probably zero functional storage. If you have seen my bookcase makeover story here you will happily see that I have a, dum dum dum …’BIG PROBLEM’ (kudos to kids cartoon Peg + Cat. When they solve a problem, I feel I’m closer to solving mine.)
First of all, decide what you need to store.
1. Books, magazines, newsletters, mail, receipts, notepaper, catalogues, stationary etc.
Then throw out , or kindly donate to good will, all the uncoordinated stuff that you have already that’s making you not excited about your office.
2. Trash, good will. Easy done.
Finally, go shopping for exactly what you need. The list at number 1. will ensure you only buy for what you need to store or organise with maybe a little extra for expanding storage.
3. Book ends, magazine holders, filing cabinet, filing document boxes, desktop draws etc
Once you have re-filled all your paperwork and paraphernalia into new, gorgeous or if you’re a man, bold and manly organisers, coming home to pay the bills and go through mail will feel like heaven when you are knocking back a beer or sipping some tea through a chocolate Tim Tam. Ladies, know what I’m talking about!
A lot of stores will already have a coordinated collection ready to go and all you will need to do is choose the colour. This saves a lot of time. Or you can mix and match the colours or textures to create a fancy scheme. Here is some inspiration to get you started.
