I didn’t always like rattan, it’s true. I thought it was an aged 70’s trend that seemed to not want to die, even though it has been used at least since the Egyptian era. Nether-the-less, I used to have this nostalgic feeling whenever I saw rattan or cane but now I have renewed feelings. It’s like seeing something with fresh eyes, or like it never was. Like sleeping children…after they’ve completely tortured you during the day. This is all thanks to the super stylists of today who expertly curate brand new versions of rattan with other contemporary furniture and objects. And of course, the designers behind the manufacturers creating said awesome furniture and objects. Hallelujah!
Why Is Rattan Suddenly HOT…again?
There is so much rattan on the market today and that is because rattan is very versatile. It accompanies the trend-setting styles of bo-ho, tribal and coastal perfectly, due to its natural looking qualities. You might even sneak some into your very own version of ‘Australian contemporary’ style. The best part about rattan is the textural quality it brings to any space. It doesn’t have to be the honey or natural coloured variety either because it also comes in white and pure black – which is quite sexy. If you are wanting crazy colour though, try The Family Love Tree who are the absolute go-to brand for brightly coloured pieces. Seriously, you haven’t seen colour until you’ve landed on their website!
Can I Add Rattan Without Ruining My Vibe?
You might be thinking, okay, if I don’t want my house to look like nana’s how do I introduce some rattan/cane/wicker? You can filter in 1 piece such as a tray or basket to just about any room. I recently added two rattan lamp shades to a master bedroom (check that out on my Instagram) without much of a flinch, and they add extra textural depth to the room.
Picking 3-4 items, you will want to make sure you have some kind of natural theme (boho, coastal etc) or furniture or objects in the same or a very similar colour.
Cat Davis, Interior Decorator
I am loving the rattan inserts on the cabinetry on a recent Kyle and Kara build (Long Jetty) which is probably where I definitely confirmed I was in love with this new use of the old material.
